Victoria Spinning Wheel Review

Article by Teresa Simons

Yes, The Victorias are here!!!! I have been spinning on mine since mid December and love it even though I had promised myself I wouldn't take it out of the box till after the holidays. Well, so much for that promise!

The wheel spins like a dream and even though it is a double treadle, I only need one foot to make it spin. And does it ever spin so easily! The backpack that comes with the wheel, includes a separate lazy kate and the wheel comes with 3 bobbins. The wheel sets up easily by just pulling a pin and then folds to an upright position for spinning. The case comes with enough room to put about a pound of wool in for your spinning projects. There is an outside zipper compartment to hold what ever else you might want, knitting needles, wallet, etc. The carry case has three different carry options. You can use it as a backpack with the backpack straps or there is a shoulder strap for it.

The wheel by itself weighs about 7 pounds and inside the backpack about 12 pounds. My lap top computer actually weighs more than the Victoria wheel. Or there are short straps that you can use to hand carry the pack.  When the Victoria is folded it is about 4 inches thick. The backpack is about 6 inches thick so it will fit right under your bed, or under the seat of the airline as carry on luggage. Just make sure to request a seat by the emergency exit, so you can take her out and use the wheel in flight. The seats by the emergency exits are always wider with more leg room, and the Victoria should fit. I haven't tried it yet, but the wheel takes up very little space.  Oh, and the bobbins hold about 4 ounces of fiber. The ratios on the wheel are: 1:6, 1:8.5, and 1:13.

The wheel is easy to treadle and even with the slower rations, it spins the fine yarns quickly. Louet has announced a high speed flyer for this wheel, but it won't be out till mid-1007. So, far I've spun wool, cotton, Karaoke roving ( a blend of soy silk and merino wool) silk, and vicuna on her and the yarns have all come out lovely! The Victoria is a scotch tension wheel and easy to adjust and the bobbins are easy and fast to change.
