Fiber Femmes Helping Others

6 in 2006 - Mittens!

Article by Ann in PA

It gets cold on the Cheyenne River (Lakota Sioux) Reservation of South Dakota, where more than 650 school-age children gather daily for recreation and other activities at "The Main" (Billy Mills Youth Center). They and their families will be the beneficiaries of this challenge.

Little kids (and big ones, too) need warm hands! Warm hands for walking to school, warm hands for doing chores, warm hands for playing outside.

So, this challenge really is about warm hands.

This is a GRAND OPPORTUNITY to use up odd bits of yarn and try out new patterns.

Who can play? Anyone, whether they knit, crochet, or sew.

What shall we send? Mittens and gloves! 1 (not 1 *pair*, One, single.) per week. Sizes for toddlers through large teens. Plain or fancy. Stripes, checks, flowered with little animal faces embroidered on.  Any fiber, any color. The only restriction is that they must be WARM!

When will we do this? Now through September. The goal is 6 pairs. There are 16 weeks till the deadline, so if you choose to participate, you'll have 1 week to gather your materials and start, then a week off after each 2 pairs to plan the next 2 pairs. The last week of September can be used to weave in ends, block (if they need it), find a box, etc.

Mailing for the Mitten Blitz will be THE FIRST WEEK IN OCTOBER, so I must receive them in time for re-mailing.

Pithy rules:

1) Between now and the first week in October make 6 pairs of gloves or mittens suitable for kids 0-18 years.

2) Mail them to me before the first week of October.

Prize drawing. There will be prizes (by random draw). To be included in the prize draw,  send 6 (or more) pairs of gloves or mittens that you made.

My decision is final and not open to scrutiny ;-)
Are there any questions? (I just know I've forgotten something.)
