Fiber Femme Travel Adventure August 14 - 25, 2007 Craft and Fiber Adventure Tour in the Maramures region of Romania and the Ukraine
Magical Romania and Ukraine Fiber and
Craft Tour takes place August 14 - 25, 2007. The fiber and craft portion
of our tour takes place in Romania and the Ukraine but we'll also visit
Slovakia and Hungary as well.
We start by visiting crafters in the
Ukraine! The fascinating Mukachevo market has mounds of paprika and
saffron, folk artists, art and exhibits. From the Ukraine we cross into
the Maramures region of Romania
where time has stood still. The EU has
yet to change this lovely, quaint area (familiar with the term"last ones
to visit?") and rural village
markets sell everything from flowers to animals to home made brew.
The
Sapanta Merry Cemetery is a UNESCO Treasure and has beautiful grave
markers displaying the deceased's work - spinners, weavers, farmers,
shepherds and more. Women stand at their doorways spinning on drop
spindles, selling hand woven rugs, pillows and other hand crafted fiber
goods. Women welcome you into their homes to watch as they weave on
floor looms worn smooth by generations of weavers.
Time in Romania is fluid with everything
changing on a moment's notice. Expect the unexpected! Perhaps a village
folk festival, a visit with a renowned rug maker or a woman bleaching flax
in the field. We've been known to stop on a dime, pull to the side of the
road and visit with a new found spinner.
We'll visit Transylvania, the birthplace
of Dracula and sit in the village square sipping wonderful micro brewed
beer or soft drinks.
Down the road, there are numerous
opportunities to buy textiles and fiber equipment at wonderful antique and
museum shops. Just a bit further we'll pull over to visit dozens of
artisans practicing their crafts on
both sides of the narrow road.
Too, too many wonderful things to talk
about here. If you're interested in this life-changing trip of a lifetime,
please contact Sandra at
