Potter Craft Publishing Article by Sandra Bennett
I'm a book person....love owning them, sharing them, giving them as gifts...love references books, picture books, recipe books, how-to books, knitting/fiber/spinning/crochet/weaving books, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, etc. I just LOVE books! They give me a sense of possibility, of the infinite, of something goods is about to happen. They teach me, lead me, guide me and make me think. Throughout the years, there have been several publishing houses that consistently turn out beautiful, informative, wonderful books.
Potter Publishing is one of those companies. The Moosewood Cookbook, for many decades a favorite on my kitchen shelf, was published by Potter. When I started seeing their many knitting, crocheting and other fiber related books, I decided to contact them for more information. The Potter Craft website says, "the joy of holding something beautiful begins the moment you take the book from the shelf." So true!
Potter Craft is part of Clarkson Potter which is an imprint of the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, Inc. Random House is the book publishing arm of Betelsmann, a Germany based family-owned company. Potter Craft was launched in Spring 2006 and compliments the cookbook and lifestyle book category of Clarkson Potter. They have approximately forty books featuring the fiber arts industry but also publish in other areas of craft including paper crafts and jewelry.
While Potter Craft doesn't have a mission statement, all of their books reflect the gold standard for which Clarkson Potter has maintained for nearly five decades. They feel their books "anticipate a reader's needs, offer the delight of discovery, and provide the inspiration to take one's skills somewhere new."
If you've read Mason Dixon Knitting, Morehouse Farm Knits, Mindful Knitting, Knitter's Stash and others, then you've read a Potter Craft book. Potter Craft has a "look" that says quality, beauty, knowledge and information. When I see a book published by Potter Craft Publishing, I already know I'll like that book. I'll like the photos, the layout, the design and know it will bring me years of enjoyment and pleasure. And, The Crown Publishing Group, as a whole, has books that appeal to me and my sensitivities. Even the "hard hitting" books are written with a sense of dignity and design that doesn't cause me to wince because the author has used an unflattering style or verbiage to comment about a rival. Potter Craft books make me feel it's all about the journey *and* the destination. I'm always curious to see their next book!
